How to Make a Christmas Stocking – Crafts for Kids

How to Make a Christmas Stocking

from wikiHow – The How to Manual That You Can Edit
Kids love getting small gifts in their stocking for Christmas. The tradition is for each child, and sometimes each member of the family, to have a personalized stocking near the Christmas tree. It doesn’t get much more personalized than making your own stocking from scratch, so here’s a good holiday crafts project for the little ones!

  1. Make the template. Draw the shape of a stocking on a piece of card and cut it out to make a template. You can make it as big or small as you like and even make mini stockings to hang on the tree.
  2. Draw on the felt. Fold the felt in half or use two separate pieces. Place the template on the felt and draw around it in chalk.
  3. Pin the felt. Use a couple of pins to pin the two pieces of felt together.
  4. Sew together. Sew around the outline of the stocking with embroidery thread. Make the first stitch at the top corner a double stitch, to ensure that it is really strong. Then continue sewing around the outline using a simple running stitch. Sew along the top on both sides for a neat finish, but remember not to sew them completely together, so that an opening remains.
  5. Trim. Trim the material with pinking shears, about 1 cm / 0.4 inches away from the stitching.
  6. Make a hole. Punch a hole in the corner at the top of the stocking.
  7. Loop the cord. Cut a length of cord and tie a knot in one end. Trim off the excess. Thread the other end through the hole in the stocking and tie it in a knot. Tie both ends together to make a loop.
  8. Decorate. Decorate the stocking by gluing pieces of gold confetti in places all over the front of the stocking.

  • If you turn the stocking inside out before punching the hole and stringing the stocking, it won’t have any rough edges.
