Entry for 13 December 2008

Hello Again to Our Loyal Subscribers

I realise I have been quiet in the update department lately. This is not because I have not been working but rather working longer hours with a difficult internet connection. Particularly as Christmas draws near, you will find updates and free downloads linked via the pages at http://www.staidenshomeschool.com/activities/christmas/christmas.html

Reading Comprehension has become quite popular in this household recently and I have compiled some lovely books which are available in “Grade” form for Free from the site. The books are short “Lessons of Life” with simple Comprehension Questions after the story. As each “Grade” progresses the stories get longer, as do the comprehension questions until the book being read becomes an entire Unit Study. I hope you will make use of these FREE resources. The books and other free workbooks can be found at http://www.staidenshomeschool.com/activities/printables/activitybooks1.html

Just in time for the end of year, if you feel the need to stock up, please visit these new pages on our site with exceptional resources & links:

The following FREE & almost Free Resources are absolutely TOP QUALITY, ready to print/teach/learn and deserve Pride of Place on every educational site – there are literally thousands of resources to choose from and so I have divided them into various pages in my site to enable you to absorb what each site has on offer and see if it will fit into your style of education. I have NO doubt that you will visit these sites time and again. !! :)) Please check back regularly as I add new free Teaching Resources to these pages.

Having teamed up with Currclick.com recently this does not mean I will not be providing free resources through St Aiden’s, my blogs and Childdevleopmentspot.com. It only means that I have expanded my areas of interest and research and in doing so can now bring you even more educational materials and resources and links. I will still be first in line to promote an exceptional site or one that is offering really useful and free or nearly free resources and materials.

While researching and compiling a Kids Cooking & Craft Book these last few days I came across some lovely simple but original crafts and basic gifts that can be made by your child and presented with pride to the recipient this Christmas Holiday.

PLEASE NOTE THAT WITH CRAFTS INVOLVING GLUE, SMALL OBJECTS, SHARP OBJECTS, HOT SURFACES, GAS, HEAT, LIQUIDS – IN FACT ALMOST FOR ANY CRAFT – ADULT SUPERVISION IS REQUIRED AND SHOULD BE PROVIDED. PLEASE DO NOT LET YOUR CHILD ATTEMPT ANY CRAFTS WITHOUT ADEQUATE SUPERVISION.

SNIFF BOOKS

Make scented books to illustrate child-dictated stories or to describe family cooking experiences, such as making fruit salad. Cut out felt shapes of fruits, mints or nuts like almond and hazelnut, and use an eyedropper to apply the scent to the cloth. Then glue the shapes to sheets of construction paper, and child’s sentences, and bind with yarn into a book.

RAIN/SNOW CATCHER

Make a rain catcher with a rinsed, clear plastic peanut butter jar. Place it outside for a set time, then measure the water/snow inside. Try to guess what the next measurement would be if the can had been left outside for twice as long.

ff

CRYSTAL GARDEN

Place broken pieces of brick or terra cotta clay in a glass bowl or jar. Pour the following solution over this: 4 tsp. water

1 tsp. ammonia

4 tsp. bluing

1 tsp. Mercurochrome

4 tsp. salt

Add more solution each day until the garden has grown to the desired size.

MY SITE OF THE WEEK:

As a publisher with Currclick now I have been writing books that have not appeared on my website for free download but are written expressly for Currclick. For the purpose of my subscribers I have bundled some of the ebooks which are all curriculum based, to ensure that your child gets hundreds of hours of educational fun and you get some time to finish that Christmas shopping J Every week Currclick offers free educational resources to people on the mailing list and presently have around 80 or so free curriculum-based educational downloads. I will NOT be promoting my books through this newsletter but you are more than welcome to browse our already expanding collection of books available there.

That’s it for me this time. I hope to be in touch again shortly before Christmas with a few more recipes and crafts for mum as well… and oh so yummy…. Chocolate bon bon recipes that can be made (and eaten!!) or given as gifts…

Till next time

Stay safe and God Bless

Warm Wishes
