3 sleeps to go and it seems my life revolves around Comrades Marathon.   No I am not an athlete, nor do I run – well I did once or twice, 5 km with Aiden and the kids, BUT I am married to one of South Africa’s top Athlete Managers, Craig Fry, and he DOES look after some of Africa’s top elite marathon runners.

Browsing through – okay I did not browse, I scanned from cover to cover – the Comrades Marathon Official Magazine, 2013, which we received today during Comrades Expo in Durban, I was thrilled to bits to see our very own Petros Sosibo on the cover and within the pages of the magazine.   The magazine is really one of the finest that I have seen produced for Comrades in the few years that I have been addicted to it.

I very quickly contacted Delaine Cools, Media Manager for Comrades Marathon Association, and asked for permission to scan the pages and blog them.    In keeping with her generous and vibrant nature, she said “Sure, doll!”   Thanks Delaine, you rock!

So here they are and I have a couple of comments to make at the bottom, which really isn’t anything to do with anything by the CMA, but IS incorrect information and I thought I’d put the record straight.

Here is the cover featuring our Petros Sosibo, running in age category 40+ and last year’s 9th position gold finisher – this year running for Bonitas, behind our Claude Moshiywa (Nedbank) who after the disqualification of F1 Bluff Meats’ 7th position (for banned substances) had both dropped from 10th and 9th respectively.

Our beloved Stephen Muzhingi, (winner 2009, 2010 and 2011) came in at a respectable 6th position, after a harrowing ordeal the previous day and throughout the evening, seeing him going straight to the starting line from the hospital where his wife was very ill.   Stephen is running in the colours of Toyota SA Athletics Club, backed by major sponsors Adidas and FedGroup.

It is unfortunate that Nedbank Running Club Manager, Nick Bester, himself a Comrades legend, erroneously stated that Claude Moshiywa (A firm South African favorite for Comrades 2013 up run) is employed full time by ABSA.   On a point of correction, Claude is actually employed full time by FNB.   This has not hampered his being the recipient of four gold medals, and achieving 3rd position in the 2011 uprun.

Take the #Poll – Will #Muzhingi win Comrades 2013?

Everyone is talking about it, the Ultimate Human Race, Comrades Marathon this year to be held on 02 June, an uprun from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.

Controversy surrounds whether or not 3 times champ Stephen Muzhingi, who holds the uprun title, will take back his title from Ludwick Mamabolo, who, after a protracted hearing, banning, unbanning, and all the rest of the events that go along with being found to be testing positive of utilizing a banned substance, was awarded his Trophy and Gold Medal, and his 1st place at a function held at Comrades Marathon House earlier this month.

World Champ bemoans lack of Corporate Sponsors @CollenMakaza featured in @TheParadeMag #Zimbabwe, Come on Africa, its about #Teamwork

How delighted I am to see a full feature of our dear friend, and adopted family member, being featured in this brand new magazine. Issue number 2, April 2013, on page 53 the Sports Writer in Chitungwiza discusses Collen’s concerns about the lack of corporate support in Mr Pace Marathon, his brainchild from 2009, which is run under the auspices of the Harare Athletics Board, NAAZ and IAAF. Collen arrived in South Africa today to assist with athletes in the Comrades Marathon. Collen’s personal manager and agent is Craig Fry.

Not only has Collen (and we know this from personal experience) financed the majority of the marathon (and other races) from his own pocket, but he holds a full time job and still finds the time to train and run in prestigious races around the world, and he selflessly commenced the Mr Pace Marathon with the aim of giving back to the community he so loves, within the sport he so loves, and to “identify and nurture talent that lies in abundance, mostly in high density areas…”

Come on Africa, we can do better than this…. Rally around and put Mr Pace Marathon on the Global map as a race you need NOT to miss…. Africa has some outstanding athletes, collectively the best in the world in so far as running is concerned. Let’s work together to encourage and nurture the talent that lies throughout Africa, in the little children and young adults who look up to the likes of their Zimbabwean heroes, Collen Makaza and Stephen Muzhingi, amongst others.

Collen made history in 2010 when he beat the world record when he was placed first in the IAU World 50km championships in Ireland. In 2011 he could not defend his title due to injury, but in 2012, competed to come a respectable 2nd position.

But as a running nation, as a continent of elite runners, YOU can make a difference!  Click on the image links for full size images, and to read the article.

South Africa | Freedom House – Yes, YOU can express an opinion and follow-up on reports for general benefit and information!

Posted in Freedom of Press with tags , , , on May 2, 2013 by Donnette E Davis

Freedoms of expression and of the press are protected in the constitution and generally respected in practice, and South Africa has vibrant journalists’ and press freedom advocacy organizations. However, several apartheid-era laws and a 2004 Law on Antiterrorism permit authorities to restrict reporting on the security forces, prisons, and mental institutions. Moreover, recent legislation could further restrict the scope of permissible reporting in South Africa. In 2009, the controversial Film and Publications Amendment Act was signed into law to protect against child pornography and hate speech. The legislation—which requires any publisher not recognized by the press ombudsman to submit a wide range of potentially “pornographic” or “violence-inciting” materials to a government board for approval—was widely criticized by press freedom advocates as a means of prepublication censorship.

In November 2011, the Constitutional Court accepted a multiparty legal challenge to the law. Also in November, the National Assembly, the lower house of Parliament, passed the controversial Protection of Information Bill, despite vociferous opposition from private media outlets, most opposition parties, and a raft of civil society and freedom of expression organizations. Just two months earlier, the ruling African National Congress ANC party had withdrawn the bill for possible amendment, though no significant changes were made. The bill allows state agencies and government officials to classify a wide range of information—including “all matters relating to the advancement of the public good” and “the survival and security of the state”—as in the “national interest” and thus subject to significant restrictions on publication and disclosure. It mandates prison terms of 3 to 25 years for violations and does not allow a “public interest” defense. To become law, the bill must also be approved by the National Council of Provinces, the upper house, before being signed into law by the president.
