Running for a living – it’s payday by Events/Races to athletes placed in an event. What if… What if your payday never comes?

It is becoming somewhat of a farce in South Africa at the moment with major road races taking unacceptably lengthy times to pay athletes prize money that they have rightfully earned from participating in races and finishing in the paying positions.

Elite athletes are professionals who generally run for a living – they run to support their families – and very obviously, as an employee relies on his monthly salary, they rely on the prize winnings as their income. Those who do 9 to 5s will understand the frustration and inconvenience that comes with not being paid in time (or not at all) for a service rendered.

This excerpt is from a post I wrote recently on Running Matters regarding the non payment of athletes’s winnings.  Our research was so voluminous with so much input from well known athletes (and club managers, so-called agents) that we have decided it was worth a little extra time and research to provide factual information on those races Before making the information public, as it is tantamount to #NamingAndShaming.  We want to provide facts not assumptions.

However, it did come as a pleasant surprise to note that Sam September, of Township to Township Marathon did in fact telephonically communicate with Prodigal Khumalo, albeit it threatening not to pay the race winnings.

As at time of writing, Sam has not contacted any of the authors, and neither has Black Pepper, the events company involved responded.  Legal action has commenced.

have you, or has someone you know had a similar experience?  We’d love to know.

Craig Fry talking on the panel at the Ethekwini a Sports Indaba recently.  Oh, and there’s a new Mayoral Feet for the LM, so non payment is not due to being cash strapped!
