#EZEMVELO KZN WILDLIFE SUSPENDS #KWACHEETAH OPERATIONS after three cheetah attacks in recent months
25 August 2015
EZEMVELO KZN WILDLIFE (Ezemvelo) has decided to suspend commercial exhibition at KwaCheetah. KwaCheetah operates from within Nambithi Game Reserve situated outside Ladysmith. The decision to suspend KwaCheetah follows the recent incidents of cheetahs attacking at least three people within the last three months.
The first incident that Ezemvelo is aware of happened on 28th June 2015. The last two happened on 5th and 6th August 2015. The Cheetah involved in all these incidents will not be destroyed. The investigation is still on going and the Cheetah has not shown any form of aggression during the investigation.
Ezemvelo instituted an investigation on Wednesday, 12 August 2015 to determine how these attacks happened and if KwaCheetah was conducting its activities according to the Management Plan that they had submitted to Ezemvelo when they applied for a Keep in Captivity permit.
During the investigation, Ezemvelo discovered that KwaCheetah was already conducting certain activities which are still being considered whilst other activities are not in line with their Management Plan. The activities that are not in line with the submitted Management Plan have resulted in the extensive consultation and lengthy review of the proposed Management Plan.
KwaCheetah has amenably welcomed the decision and has further ceased all commercial exhibition until Ezemvelo has decided on the status of their Management Plan. Both parties are working together to ensure that KwaCheetah conducts its activities within the applicable legislation failing which the permit will not be granted.
“It has to be noted that application for a permit does not automatically imply that a permit will be granted; rather that Ezemvelo will consider all prevailing facts before reaching a decision. Applicants conducting operations without obtaining a permit prior to commencing their activities do so at their own risk. The public has a right to ask if such organizations have necessary permits and are advised not to visit such places should they not be happy with an explanation provided.” The Acting CEO of Ezemvelo, Dr MD Mabunda warned.

As the cricket seasons nears its end…

Posted in Cowan House, craig fry, Cricket, sport with tags , , on February 28, 2014 by Donnette E Davis

It’s been a learning curve for our boys playing under 9 this year.  With only one practice behind them they took on a far superior St Charles College team, emerging as victorious, even though St Charles sent them packing – victorious because it was their first major match in the senior phase…

We’re very proud of Aiden, who has improved in leaps and bounds this year, and now eats, sleeps and breathes cricket.  I have uploaded match photos to Dropbox, if any parent of any of the players would like the link, please drop me a line.  The entire album can be downloaded.

Going through photos yesterday, I have chosen one or two that for me speak more than words… starting with my absolute favorite, Aiden yesterday against Clifton.  He went in knowing he was going to try and smash every ball coming his way, and he tried.  First ball he failed.  After a couple of runs, he connected properly smashing it into the air, looking good for a boundary – but Clifton’s exceptional fielding was no match for us during this match.  He was caught out.

This picture says it all – I remember seeing once years back very similar of Steve Waugh from Australia..

Aiden after being caught out, good ball, good hit into the air - alas magnificent fielding brought his short innings to an abrupt end....

Truly a great photo I think, capturing the expression of disbelief… great photos Craig Fry 🙂

*dances* delighted that my amazing husband finally has his own independent website, powered by WordPress of course (We love WordPress) and you can visit him and see what he’s up to or what races are on the cards, or even just to see who he’s bumping heads with today, tomorrow or the next 🙂

Craig Fry and his passion for justice in athletics in South Africa, his passion for his athletes and his passion for his beloved sport is evident in all he writes.  Good luck with your new website.

much love

TWEET OF THE WEEK: Claude Moshiywa | Columnists | @BDliveSA

Posted in Claude Moshiywa, Comrades Marathon, craig fry, craigsathletes, social media, Social Networking, south africa with tags on June 7, 2013 by Donnette E Davis

WELCOME to Tweet of the Week. Every Friday I shall use this column to hand out this award to one person who has tweeted something of significance, and explain why. There are no strict rules, only that the tweet in question must offer an important insight, define a debate (notorious or otherwise) or mark an occasion. The winner will receive an avatar they can use as their Twitter profile picture for a week.

This week, the Tweet of the Week goes to @MoshiywaC for:

Tweet of the Week

claude moshiywa tweet of the week from bdlive

“Oh my gosh tomorrow will be my first long run towards my goal to win Comrades.”

Profile: “Comrade” Claude Moshiywa, as he has become known, is a South African long-distance runner and ultra-marathon specialist. He has five Comrades Marathon gold medals and, on June 2, became the first South African to win the “up” marathon in 21 years. He finished in a time of five hours, 32 minutes. He currently has 788 followers on Twitter.

Citation: That tweet was published by Moshiywa on September 28 last year; eight months later he would achieve his goal. You have to give it to the man: in a country of broken promises, he delivered. For sheer excellence and self-belief, then, he wins the award.

Moshiywa’s tweet raises the question: why is it that we generally hold professional sportspeople to a different standard than politicians? I believe it has everything to do with excellence and expectation, the two being closely related.

One rightly expects a higher standard from a person or institution that values excellence, for their benchmark is always aspirational. The current standard, which might be excellent itself, is never enough. Excellence always seeks to improve on itself.

Before the 2013 race, Moshiywa had four gold medals. That, however, was not enough to satisfy him; he wanted to win. So he raised the bar. Now that he has won, you can be sure his goal will be to win again and better his time. In this way, professional sports embodies everything that is wonderful about the idea of excellence and progress.

Claude Moshiywa, 2010 to 2013 – how he did it! @ComradesRace Pictures + Videos

Posted in Claude Moshiywa, Comrades Marathon, craig fry, craigsathletes with tags , , , , , , , on June 7, 2013 by Donnette E Davis

In 2010 I was introduced to Claude Moshiywa as he came on board under Craig Fry’s management and as his exclusive worldwide agent.  Back then he was running for Mr Price, as I recall, I missed the hands-on activity at 2010 Comrades Marathon but still have many images of he and Stephen running very closely together.

From the beginning of 2011 started the early Saturday morning training runs with Claude, most of which I did not go on, but he trained with other top South African marathoners, who have gone on to win several prestigious races, and have also gone from strength to strength, both here and internationally.

Filming early morning training runs was part and parcel of what Craig does with the athletes, he checks their times, speeds, and they work together to know what is needed and when it is needed during their ultra long sessions.

In 2012 it was a pure battle between Ludwick and Claude for most of the race, until Ludwick pulled ahead to take what turned out to be a very controversial 1st position.   He has since been acquitted of the positive dope testing charges, on technicalities, and on 04 May 2013 received his winner’s trophy.   Claude was placed 8th in 2012.

Our pick for 2012 was in fact Claude, as can be seen by this tweet i sent out on 02 June 2012

Claude Wins Comrades Marathon 2013

On seeing a picture of Claude from a Nedbank Running Club Shoot, I just thought “there’s this year’s winner…” so that’s what I tweeted, and Pinterested and Facebooked 3 weeks prior to Comrades Race 2013 – I even sent it to Claude!…   Look at that face… tell me it does not have “winner” quietly and humbly written all over it!

3 sleeps to go and it seems my life revolves around Comrades Marathon.   No I am not an athlete, nor do I run – well I did once or twice, 5 km with Aiden and the kids, BUT I am married to one of South Africa’s top Athlete Managers, Craig Fry, and he DOES look after some of Africa’s top elite marathon runners.

Browsing through – okay I did not browse, I scanned from cover to cover – the Comrades Marathon Official Magazine, 2013, which we received today during Comrades Expo in Durban, I was thrilled to bits to see our very own Petros Sosibo on the cover and within the pages of the magazine.   The magazine is really one of the finest that I have seen produced for Comrades in the few years that I have been addicted to it.

I very quickly contacted Delaine Cools, Media Manager for Comrades Marathon Association, and asked for permission to scan the pages and blog them.    In keeping with her generous and vibrant nature, she said “Sure, doll!”   Thanks Delaine, you rock!

So here they are and I have a couple of comments to make at the bottom, which really isn’t anything to do with anything by the CMA, but IS incorrect information and I thought I’d put the record straight.

Here is the cover featuring our Petros Sosibo, running in age category 40+ and last year’s 9th position gold finisher – this year running for Bonitas, behind our Claude Moshiywa (Nedbank) who after the disqualification of F1 Bluff Meats’ 7th position (for banned substances) had both dropped from 10th and 9th respectively.

Our beloved Stephen Muzhingi, (winner 2009, 2010 and 2011) came in at a respectable 6th position, after a harrowing ordeal the previous day and throughout the evening, seeing him going straight to the starting line from the hospital where his wife was very ill.   Stephen is running in the colours of Toyota SA Athletics Club, backed by major sponsors Adidas and FedGroup.

It is unfortunate that Nedbank Running Club Manager, Nick Bester, himself a Comrades legend, erroneously stated that Claude Moshiywa (A firm South African favorite for Comrades 2013 up run) is employed full time by ABSA.   On a point of correction, Claude is actually employed full time by FNB.   This has not hampered his being the recipient of four gold medals, and achieving 3rd position in the 2011 uprun.

Take the #Poll – Will #Muzhingi win Comrades 2013?

Everyone is talking about it, the Ultimate Human Race, Comrades Marathon this year to be held on 02 June, an uprun from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.

Controversy surrounds whether or not 3 times champ Stephen Muzhingi, who holds the uprun title, will take back his title from Ludwick Mamabolo, who, after a protracted hearing, banning, unbanning, and all the rest of the events that go along with being found to be testing positive of utilizing a banned substance, was awarded his Trophy and Gold Medal, and his 1st place at a function held at Comrades Marathon House earlier this month.
