Homeschooling Information & Resources

When we embarked on our homeschooling journey some years ago it was with little knowledge, a lot of frustration and mounds of enthusiasm.

Having experienced first hand the tragedy that has become the public school system in South Africa we were left with little option but to go our own way.  Tragedy is mild for what many learners experience in many of the public schools in South Africa today.  That is an aside.  Horror stories abound.

In 1994 legislation was passed to legalise home education in terms of South Africa’s New Constitution – which really is so terribly contradictory it cannot reasonably be relied upon.

The Constitution provides for parents to opt for home education.  However the Department of Education does not recognise this part of the Constitution and will in whichever manner they are able to, make life extremely difficult for families who choose this way.

Demands such as registering as a homeschool, reporting here there and everywhere and allowing these (many of them) unqualified and ignorant people into your homes and your lives will ultimately result in legal action against the homeschooling family.

They cannot win – they will not win if they are basing their case simply on the fact that one has opted to homeschool their children.  For this purpose however – any legal battle is fraught with uncertainty at the best of times, legal fees are prohibitive and emotionally it is draining – I would recommend anyone wishing to engage in homeschooling to contact the Pestalozzi Fund, which is a legal defence Organisation protecting the rights of South African citizens.  Leenderd van Oostrum is highly qualified and experienced in matters of education and law and will go to every length to protect the homeschool family.
